Come Write Out And Say IT

Do We Want Horsepower? or Horse Power?

Throughout the years, Americans, along with the rest of the world, have been sinking deeper and deeper into the arms of oil industries. We use oil to make water bottles. We use oil to make plastic grocery bags. We use oil in paint. We use oil to make the fancy tricked out plastic parts on Roush Mustangs, and most importantly, we use oil to get them going. Basically, the whole world would be sent back to the ancient times of the wooden wheel if it weren’t for oil. In other words, we wouldn’t be driving around a fancy Roush Mustang, but we would be riding a saddled up Mustang instead. So, in order to keep our horsepower under our hoods instead of under our saddles, we are going to have to get a game plan for the oil issue, and our first step should definitely be more drilling offshore.

As we start more offshore drilling, we also need to start broadening our other energy sources. According to the Energy Information Association, today only 7% of the United States energy sources comes from renewable energy. (EIA) If we were to increase our production of more energy from renewable sources, our country could become less dependent on oil. While we drill offshore, we can spend more time exploring alternative energies and less time complaining about high gas prices. However, it cannot be just any energy source that helps us out of our oil addiction. According to Lee Dye, if we decided to run all of our cars on ethanol, “we would need to cover 97% of our land with corn.” (Dye) If we make the wrong decision on what energy source to use, then we would live like scarecrows in the middle of a never ending corn field. We don’t want to  make the wrong decision for the generations to come, so, we need to slowly ween ourselves off of oil by drilling offshore and trying to find that perfect solution to our oil problem.

If we would all put our heads together to find a reasonable solution, we would make for a better tomorrow. However, until then, we need to do what we know, and we need to expand our areas to drill offshore. We don’t just have to do it for ourselves and our children, but we have to do it to save those poor ponies’ backs.

What a witty intro–I love it! Your wordplay on “mustangs” throughout the piece is quite effective.

You also construct a sound argument. Nice job!
